We’ve used the term contrast before when talking about colour, but contrast dressing actually has to do more with the style of item rather than the hue. One of our favourite tricks to add interest to an outfit, is to play with the feel of each piece and have them work together. The easiest way to do this is to start by pairing a very feminine piece with something a bit more edgy. Competing details like lace and leather or florals and fur, make for an unexpected twist on your look!
Soft florals, lace, peplum styles or peter pan collars are all details that speak very feminine to the eye. To avoid these looking too sweet, try pairing these details with more edgy/masculine pieces. An easy way to do this is to pair a feminine top with either leather leggings or distressed denim. Something cute on top but a bit more rock n’ roll below! The details can be as subtle as a zipper on the t-shirt paired with a super girly skirt!
Another fun way to add contrast to your outfit, is to have fun with the textures of the pieces that you’re pairing! Sherpa has been a huge trend this season and we found pairing them with a different texture of pant, like this leather look here, balanced out the textures of both pieces beautifully!
Other combos to try include suede and silk or heavy knits with distressed denim!
One more combo to try is to play with the formalness of a piece and mix it up! This might look like athleisure paired with a more formal moto jacket instead of a hoodie, or a frilly dress with a flat shoe instead of a stiletto.
You can amp up the drama or keep it more subtle – the options are endless!
